The buildup of soot can fall from the walls to the base of the chimney or even back into the boiler. This can lead to the overproduction of carbon monoxide, which can be forced back into your home if soot is blocking the flue of the chimney or standing in the base of the chimney.
The oil company sends a technician every year to service my boiler. Do I still need a chimney cleaner?
According to the CSIA, people commonly think the oil service technician also takes care of the chimney, but this is not true. Although he or she will clean the base of the chimney and brush the connector pipes, the rest of the chimney will be ignored. Your oil service technician may even tell you your entire boiler system is okay without even looking at the interior or exterior of the chimney.
