Chimney Sweeping & Cleaning in New York’s Hudson Valley: We’re Your Expert Chimney Sweeps
Your chimney should be professionally cleaned once a year. This is a recommendation agreed upon by nearly every major chimney and fire safety organization in the United States and around the world. Primarily, a sweep’s job is to remove all the creosote that’s accumulated and begun to line the inside of your chimney. This highly-flammable byproduct can create numerous problems if left to build up.
Your sweep will also check for blockages that could lead to backdrafting, loss of efficiency, carbon monoxide poisoning, or a chimney fire. He or she will ensure that every part of your chimney is operating as it should.
How Often Should I Have My Chimney Swept?
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA 211) recommends that chimneys, fireplaces, and vents be inspected at least once per year and cleaned as needed. For most homeowners who use their fireplace regularly throughout the heating season, an annual chimney sweep is the standard – ideally scheduled in late summer or early fall before you start using it again. However, frequency can vary based on how often you burn, what you burn, and your chimney’s overall age and condition.
At All Seasons Chimney, we serve homeowners throughout the Hudson Valley – including Orange, Rockland, Dutchess, Ulster, Putnam, and Westchester counties – and we recommend never skipping your annual sweep, especially given the region’s long heating seasons.
What Chimney Sweep Company Should I Hire?
Because it’s out of sight and out of mind, the chimney is an oft overlooked but very important component of your home. When determining which chimney sweep company to hire, the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends that you ask the following questions of a prospective sweep:
A: All Seasons Chimney, Inc. has served Orange, Rockland, Ulster, Putnam and Dutchess counties for more than 25 years. During that time, we’ve come across every chimney and challenge imaginable.
Q: Does your company offer current references?
A: Yes, we are happy to provide potential customers with references.
Q: Does your company have unresolved complaints filed within the city or state consumer protection agency or Better Business Bureau?
A: No, we do not. We are proud to be Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited.
Q: Does your company or individual carry a valid business liability insurance policy to protect your home and furnishings against accidents?
A: All Seasons Chimney is fully insured and certified. In addition, we take great care to protect our customers’ flooring and furnishings during our sweepings.
What Is Creosote & Why Is It Dangerous?
Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood. When smoke travels up your chimney, it cools and condenses on the flue walls, leaving behind a dark, tar-like substance. Creosote exists in three stages:
- Stage 1 (Flaky/sooty): Easiest to remove with routine brushing.
- Stage 2 (Tar-like, crunchy): Harder to remove; requires specialized tools.
- Stage 3 (Glazed): The most dangerous – dense, highly flammable, and very difficult to remove without professional chemical treatments.
Creosote is the leading cause of chimney fires. According to the CSIA, chimney fires can exceed 2,000°F, which is hot enough to crack flue tiles, damage the chimney structure, and ignite surrounding combustibles. Regular sweeping removes creosote before it reaches dangerous levels. Homeowners in the Hudson Valley who rely on their fireplaces or wood stoves through cold winters are especially at risk if sweeping is neglected.
Is Chimney Sweeping Messy? Will It Dirty My Home?
This is one of the most common concerns homeowners have – and understandably so. When performed by trained professionals, a chimney sweep should leave your home just as clean as it was before we arrived. Here’s how we keep things tidy:
- Heavy-duty drop cloths are placed in front of the fireplace and around the work area.
- Our equipment includes powerful HEPA-filtered vacuums that capture fine soot particles before they can circulate.
- Technicians use controlled brushing techniques that push debris downward into a contained area.
- We clean up all debris and vacuum the firebox before we leave.
If your chimney has unusually heavy Stage 2 or Stage 3 creosote buildup, the process may be more involved. We’ll always communicate with you ahead of time if we anticipate any additional mess management needs.
What’s the Difference Between a Chimney Sweep & a Chimney Inspection?
These two services are related but not the same:
- A chimney sweep (cleaning) physically removes soot, creosote, debris, and obstructions from the flue, firebox, and smoke chamber.
- A chimney inspection is a systematic assessment of the chimney’s structural integrity, components, and venting performance.
At All Seasons Chimney, we include a basic inspection with every sweep. We also offer video inspections for a more comprehensive look at your flue’s condition – particularly valuable for older homes throughout the Hudson Valley where wear and freeze-thaw damage are common.
How Much Does a Chimney Sweeping Cost?
Wondering how much a chimney sweep costs? Because every home is unique, it’s tough to give a one-size-fits-all number. Instead, your exact price will depend on three main things: the specific type of fireplace you own, how easily our technicians can access your chimney, and the level of creosote buildup inside. A heavy layer of creosote simply takes a little more time and elbow grease to properly clear out. For an accurate quote tailored to your chimney, just give us a call!
